CROSS POINT EMMAUS BOARD REPORT:
At the board meeting held 1/14/2006 many issues were discussed and several new board members welcomed. The newly elected members who joined the board are Cherri Bradley, Tem Barrett, Laura Mitchell, Julie Altom and Rev. Paul Reed. The board also approved Rev. Duane Baker to complete the term of Jack Kemper who had earlier resigned.
After consideration of scheduling conflicts due to Spring Break, etc., the board scheduled the March gathering for March 4 instead of the usual second Saturday of March. This date coincides with the last training session for the teams and will also be the commissioning service.
The board reluctantly accepted the resignation of Julie Altom and appointed Amy Wallis to fill her term on the board. This allows Amy a full term on the board and gives Julie more time to consider her pursuant of a doctorate in her field of education.

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31-32
As long as anger lives,
she continues to be the fruitful mother
of many unhappy children.
--John Climacus--

In his book of devotions, “The Bent-Knee Time,” (copyright 1918) author S.D. Gordon has the following as his introduction called “A Word At The Start.”
“These daily bits are meant to be little wedges for the Quiet Corner, to get things started.
A life of victory and power hinges on three things: an Act, a Purpose, and a Habit; an initial act, a rock-rooted purpose, and a daily habit; the act of surrender to Jesus as Master of one’s person and life, the simple, steady purpose in everything to do as He would wish, the daily habit of getting a bit of time every day off alone with the Master, with door shut, the Book open, the knee bent, and the will bent afresh.
The daily habit needs much emphasis because it puts new life-blood daily into the act and purpose. After these other two are fixed in where they belong, this is the hinge on which the whole life swings.
These little bits are meant to be distinctly secondary to the Book itself. They are simply to start one’s thoughts a-going, and to help fit the Book into one’s own daily life. The chiefest thing always is the fresh touch face-to-face with Jesus. And He always meets one at the bent-knee time to give that fresh touch. You can count on that.”
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF EMMAUS?Garmon Smith, Community Lay Director
As each of us attended our Walk to Emmaus we were instructed during one of the talks we heard that the purpose of Emmaus is to develop leaders for the local church. And most of us find that the experience can change us in many ways and encourage us to go back and be more active in our churches and assume a greater role in doing the work of Christ’s church. However, there is much more to Emmaus than just building local church leadership and in a recent Upper Room Walk to Emmaus newsletter, certain points were brought out to expand on the purpose of the Walk to Emmaus. Following are excerpts from this newsletter article authored by International Lay Director Richard Gilmore.
There are two important points about the development of leaders for the church being the purpose of Emmaus. First, Emmaus is predicated on the participants having, or acknowledging having, a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Therefore, Emmaus is a discipleship-building instrument and NOT an evangelism tool. The second point is that if people are not active Christians or church members, they should not be invited to participate in the Walk to Emmaus.
There are aspects of leadership development throughout all the parts of the Walk to Emmaus. This happens during the 72-hour experience for the pilgrims AND the team members. It happens (or should happen) during team formation. It should happen during team selection. There are parts that occur in reunion group involvement. There are parts that occur during gatherings. There are also significant parts of leadership development that occur while serving on the board or while being involved in proper sponsorship.
While pilgrims become effective instruments for Christ’s local church, continuous involvement in Emmaus activities will help to keep their spiritual batteries charged. Surprisingly, even this involvement is a part of leadership development
If you examine all of this, it will become evident that the majority of leadership development in Emmaus occurs during the 4th day. Thus, the emphasis on 4th day involvement is a proper part of carrying out the purpose of the Walk to Emmaus. To be effective in achieving the purpose of Emmaus, one will have active participation in, and in support of, 4th day activities.
Are you actively involved in the purpose of Emmaus?
