From our Community Spiritual DirectorDan Patman
I just got back home late Thursday night, June 12, from my grandson Dalton's brain surgery. It all went very well and he is responding well. But when I got to the office the next morning, I retrieved a voice mail from Jim Bradley. Jim had related that his mother had just passed away.

Let me tell you about Dolly Bradley. She went on Cross Point Emmaus Walk #54. Jim & his wife Cherri sponsored her. Dolly was hesitant to go on the Walk to Emmaus. This 90 year old thought that there were others who would benefit more than her. And, she didn't want to take someone else's place. But after some encouragement, she decided to go. It was the biggest surprise of Dolly's life when her daughter Susan (also a member of the Emmaus community in Virginia) showed up at Candlelight. And, later she got into a reunion group. She thoroughly enjoyed her experience and association with the Walk to Emmaus.

I know that, after I attended my Walk to Emmaus, I invited my mother to attend on the very next set of Walks. I thought it would be the greatest gift that I could, as a son, give to her. So I sponsored her on Emmaus Walk #4. And, even though she lived in Oklahoma City, she talked about it for years. She read her letters repeatedly. It remains one of the greatest gifts that I've been able to give my mother.

We just don't know what a great gift that sponsoring family members or friends is until after it's all said and done. I'm so glad that I have sponsored the persons I have sponsored over the years. My first set of Walks I sponsored 11 pilgrims. Took some doing, but I got it done. And, oh, how the Lord blessed. Lives were forever changed for the sake of the Gospel.

I hope you are praying about whom you might sponsor on the next set of Walks. Men's Walk #71 is on September 25-28. Women's Walk #72 is on October 2-5. Chris McDowell and Shawna Carnahan, lay directors for the fall Walks, are already putting their teams together. Certainly their lives have been impacted by the Walk to Emmaus. Pray for them! And pray about whom you're going to sponsor. It certainly made a difference in Dolly's and my mother's life. It's made a difference in so many other lives. AND, it's something that you can do.

De Colores,
Dan Patman

NOTICE:
The wedding for Duane Baker and Debra Owens is set for Saturday, June 28th at the First United Methodist Church on 14th and Broadway in Ada, Oklahoma at 3:00 p.m. Please join us on this day as we celebrate together in God’s gift of life.
DeColores and greetings from Heartland Chrysalis,

Chris and I were volunteered to be on Heartland Chrysalis Board of Directors this year and so we are (thank you Cari Dragg). The Heartland Chrysalis movement has been revamped this year as the major supporting Emmaus community has changed from Pioneer Country to Great Plains Emmaus. It has been both a little scary, but exciting at the same time. At first we didn’t know if we were going to be able to have any flights this year. (For Chrysalis-flights are the same as walks; they are caterpillars during the flight, and butterflies at the end of the flight). With God’s help, of course, we are having one set of flights this year. The flights will be August 21st to 24th for the boys, and August 28th to 31st for the girls. These flights will be at Canyon Camp near Hinton, OK. If you are reading this, it is most likely that you have been on a walk and know how loving and life-changing this can be. The same is true for the young adults who go on the flights. People, we are shaping and changing our future leaders with God’s love during the flights, just as it did during your walk. Let’s try and fill the flights to give them more fellowship, friends and memories.

On June 6th and 7th we had training where two men from the Upper Room came to update us and answer any questions we had. We got to learn a lot and have fun. Of course the biggest thing we learned is that there is always room to grow both in faith and numbers. I like to think of Chrysalis as our child. There are 4 Emmaus communities in Oklahoma that supports Heartland Chrysalis, but not much physical or monetary help to show it. It is sad to say that is mission sometimes falls into the “somebody” loop (where we all think that “somebody” else has it covered). We need to pray about what we can do to help with these flights and who we can sponsor for the flight. Plus, there are still open chairs on the board. As long as you are interested in the spirituality of our youth, you may sponsor someone for the flight. The guideline to be on a flight is that they have to have finished the 9th grade.

We also need to get our past butterfly’s more involved. One of the sad things that we have noticed is that our database is missing names as well as other information. We need to update this as well. We are planning Hoot (same as a gathering for Emmaus) to be soon and close enough for our butterfly’s to attend and reconnect with their friends. We are also thinking about having the butterfly’s help with entertainment during the walks, but that is just a thought for now. We do need the names and contact information of our past butterfly’s to be able to reach them and inform them of this change. There is an information form that can be filled out and sent back to help us update the database. Just inquire at either of the following email addresses.

If you have any information or questions you can contact either Paul Enright at paul@enrights.net, or myself, May McDowell, at mythreegilrs@yahoo.com (yes it is really spelled that way). We will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

Have a safe and blessed day,

Mary McDowell

LOVE AGAPE:
On the last mens walk my husband’s reunion group tried out a new piece of agape. Crochet beanie hats. His mom made enough for everyone on the walk with a little help. This has become a blessing in 2 ways. 1. The idea came from a Chrysalis flight and Chris had his mom and me make a duplicate. 2. Now hats are being made for patients at a local facility. I just love the way God’s love just continues to pay it forward. The hats were a hit, everyone wanted them, and still do. We need help with making more so that all pilgrims can have one. It is easy if you can crochet, or want to learn. Please contact me if you are interested.
