I am concerned about something that is happening in the Cross Point Emmaus Community. It is not unique to the Cross Point community. It happens in other Emmaus communities, as well.
Did you know that some people who serve on Emmaus teams "use" Emmaus as a way of getting back "right with the Lord?" Over the years I've heard so many in the Emmaus community say that they really needed the Walk to get back to "where they were" with the Lord. I've thought, "Why?" Why do some people need Emmaus to get them "back" or to get them "up?"
And, then, something else! In the last week I've had one person tell me that their family member, who is well thought of in the Emmaus community, is not following the Lord--drinking, partying, destroying relationship, making bad choices. And I've heard it again and again about members of our Emmaus community.
What's going on? Well, they all seem to have one thing in common. And, that is, none of them is active in an Emmaus Reunion Group. They don't seem to have time for it. The truth is, we all need to make time for it. Time for fellowship! Time for accountability! Time for brothers/sisters who love us and care for us enough to say, "What was your closest Christ this last week? What was your call to discipleship, the time and place where you went the second mile in serving others in obedience to Christ? What was the failure in your call to discipleship?
If Emmaus community members don't have that kind of accountability with brother/sister Christians in a Reunion Group or in some other kind of small group, then they too often lose their focus. They too often find themselves going it alone. They find themselves trying to live the Christian life in their own strength and power. And too often they crash and burn. Some even make a shipwreck of their faith.
I know some Emmaus community members attend their Reunion Groups haphazardly or when they attend they don't answer all the questions on the service sheet. They really can't think of anything to say when it comes to a "failure in their call to discipleship." Brothers/Sisters, I challenge you to lovingly call each other into accountability. I sometimes pray the prayer, "O Lord, show me my sin that I might confess it unto you." The Bible says, "Confess your sins to one another that you may be healed." It's really true-- Healing, forgiveness, and spiritual renewal are a normative occurrence in the lives of those who participate regularly in a Reunion Group.
I want to encourage you, if you have been on the Walk to Emmaus, to get in a Reunion Group. Fourth Day meetings will be held at several locations in southern Oklahoma on Tuesday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m., where you can join or form a Reunion Group. The Bible says, "He who endures to the end will be saved." Well, members of your Reunion Group (brothers/sisters who love you and are committed to you) will help you endure to the end.
DeColores,
